The color of penance on a Saturday spring morning


I don’t remember why deep purple is the color of penance. It’s not that I feel the need to confess anything. This flower reminds of the vestment the priest from Boston would wear at our Catholic school penance services. That is all.

I’m uncertain of the identity of this bush. It is located next to a late Victorian home that has been preserved as closely as possible to how it was in 1890. Much of its landscaping originated in that time, too.
